Abu Nawas : Stay Awake

One day, the Caliph Harun al-Rashid challenged Abu Nawas to a contest to see who could stay awake the longest. Abu Nawas accepted the challenge and they both sat down to wait for the other to fall asleep.

Hours went by and both the Caliph and Abu Nawas were still wide awake. The Caliph was impressed by Abu Nawas's endurance and asked him how he was able to stay awake for so long. Abu Nawas replied, "Your Majesty, I have a trick that helps me stay awake. I close my eyes and imagine that I am walking in a garden filled with beautiful flowers and sweet fragrances. This helps me forget my tiredness and keeps me alert."

The Caliph was intrigued by Abu Nawas's trick and decided to try it himself. He closed his eyes and began to imagine himself walking in a garden, but before he knew it, he had fallen asleep.

When he woke up, he found Abu Nawas still sitting there with his eyes closed. The Caliph was surprised and asked Abu Nawas how he had managed to stay awake for so long. Abu Nawas replied, "Your Majesty, I did not fall asleep because I was not imagining a garden. I was actually counting sheep jumping over a fence."

The Caliph was amused by Abu Nawas's cleverness and rewarded him for winning the contest.
